TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Haynes King’s football journey has taken him from Longview to Texas A&M, to Georgia Tech, and Wednesday night, King took center stage at the W.T. Brookshire Center in Tyler to receive this year’s Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
Haynes King named 2025 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recipient
King, who led Longview to the Lobos’ second-ever state title in 2018, becomes just the second player from East Texas to win the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, after Greg Ward won it back in 2015.
King recently wrapped up his college career at Georgia Tech, where he set program records for career completions and total offense, finishing 10th in the 2025 Heisman trophy voting, after leading the Yellow Jackets to a nine-win season and their first top 25 finish since 2014.
Winning the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award means a lot to the East Texan, who’s made a name for himself well beyond the piney woods.
“Just being in this conversation itself, I know there are a lot of great athletes, a great human being as well,” said King. “And to be here and to win this award, it means a lot. I mean, you definitely have to have a lot of pride coming from East Texas. Sometimes you feel like it’s underrepresented and under-appreciated because it’s so hard to get out here and recruit as well. But there’s a lot of great athletes and, you know, I’m just happy and really appreciated and blessed to be a part of this.”
King’s father, legendary Longview head football coach John King, was beyond proud to see Haynes win this year’s Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
“We are from East Texas, and being able to win the Earl Campbell Award or be a fellow East Texan is huge,” said coach King. “I think Greg Ward’s only other one has won it, and plays some good football out here. It’s tough to win this award. There are a lot of good, good, good players that will either come from Texas or play in Texas. But I’m proud of my son, and I’m proud of who he is, what he stood for, how he went about his business, the whole journey. “
King will now turn his attention to preparing for the 2026 NFL draft after adding another award to his growing collection.
