For the third straight year, Habtom Samuel will be on double duty at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

New Mexico’s star junior finished the men’s 5,000-meter semifinal in 13 minutes and 38.12 seconds Friday at the NCAA West Regional Preliminaries, qualifying for his second race at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Racing at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the Keren, Eritrea native made his move with two laps to left to win his second national semifinal of the week ahead of Iowa State’s Robin Kwemoi Bera (13:41.22) and Arkansas’ Ben Sharer (13:41.34).

With Friday's win, Samuel has now qualified for the NCAA 5K and 10K outdoor finals every year that he has been a Lobo.

Samuel was the only Lobo to advance out of the 5K semifinal. Vincent Chirchir (13:49.17) finished 13th overall to miss the cut by one spot. Collins Kiprotich (13:52.90), Iker Sanchez Lopez (14:04.62) and Evans Kiplagat (14:32.59) also missed out.

Wednesday, Kiplagat (28:56.77) finished eighth in the men’s 10K semifinal. Besides Samuel, he is the lone Lobo to qualify for one of the men’s distance finals.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be contested June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Regional preliminaries determining national qualifiers will run through Saturday.

Pamela Kosgei finished the women’s 10K semifinal in 31:27.58 on Thursday night, securing a spot in the national final.

The sophomore from Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya narrowly finished second to BYU’s Jane Hedengren (31:27.30) in Thursday’s race. The two led a field of 12 qualifiers for the title-deciding final at Hayward Field on June 11, the second day of the outdoor championship meet.

Kosgei won NCAA titles in the 5K and 10K as a freshman, finishing the latter event in 31:07.28 to demolish the previous meet record by nearly 40 seconds. In doing so, she became the first Lobo to win the event since Weini Kelati did it in 2019.
