Manchester City have been drawn to play Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in what is the showpiece tie of the round.

Elsewhere, Port Vale’s reward for reaching the FA Cup last eight of the tournament is a trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Port Vale, who are currently bottom of League One, stunned Premier League opponents Sunderland in Sunday’s fifth-round tie but now face an even tougher test if they are to reach the last four.

Arsenal, who remain in pursuit of a historic quadruple this season, will travel to Championship side Southampton, who defeated Premier League opposition in Fulham this weekend.

The historical precedents are encouraging for Arsenal, who have gone on to win the FA Cup in three of the previous five seasons in which they have faced Southampton in the competition. That includes the final of 2003, which Arsenal won 1-0.

And Leeds United will travel to the winners of Monday’s tie between West Ham United and Brentford at the London Stadium.

For Port Vale, Chelsea will be the third top-flight opponents they have faced this season. Sunday’s FA Cup meeting with Sunderland came after they were drawn to face Arsenal at home in the League Cup in September (they lost 2-0).

The FA Cup has provided a welcome distraction for the League One side, who appear destined for relegation in the coming months. Port Vale have so far defeated Maldon and Tiptree, Bristol Rovers, Fleetwood Town, Bristol City and Sunderland in this season’s FA Cup.

City’s meeting with Liverpool should be another eye-catching encounter between two teams who have become fierce rivals over the past decade.

City have had the edge over Liverpool in their two previous meetings this season, winning 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium and more recently triumphing 2-1 in dramatic circumstances at Anfield.
