At 3:57, the Avalanche defense lost track of Pittsburgh forward Tommy Novak and that allowed him to sneak into the zone and get a free shot on Wedgewood, but he came up with the big save to avoid going down 1-0.
Exactly a minute later, Nathan MacKinnon stole the puck from Parker Wotherspoon, took off on a breakaway, and sniped a shot that went off the crossbar and in to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. For MacKinnon, it was his league-leading 46th goal of the season.
Pittsburgh nodded the game up 3:12 later when Samuel Girard, a longtime Av who was traded at the deadline for Brett Kulak, set up Chinakhov for a one-timer from the point and he blasted it by Wedgewood to make it a 1-1 game.
