New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart showed love for his alma mater, Ole Miss, by attending Thursday's Fiesta Bowl against Miami. It was a bittersweet night as the Rebels competed hard but lost 31-27 on a controversial pass interference non-call.
Ole Miss made it to the College Football Playoff semifinals without Lane Kiffin, who departed for LSU in late November, an experience Dart could somewhat relate to -- minus the team success -- this year. The Giants fired Brian Daboll after a 2-8 start to Dart's rookie season and are undergoing a coaching search after winning just one more game the rest of the way.
New York plans to interview a litany of candidates, from established winners like John Harbaugh to franchise greats like Antonio Pierce. It's still early in the process, yet lip-readers caught Dart appearing to weigh in on the search. In a conversation with an Ole Miss assistant during Thursday's game, Dart looked to have named Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski as his guesses (key word) for who'll get the job. Here's the full exchange:
Much of the smoke has been centered on Harbaugh since the Baltimore Ravens shockingly fired him this week, but don't count out Stefanski. The two-time Coach of the Year has reportedly met with the Giants twice already and has an offensive background, which New York could find appealing if the priority is to maximize Dart.
Whoever the Giants hire will inherit a franchise quarterback in Dart. While he's faced criticism over his propensity to take unnecessary hits, Dart flashed for a Giants team without much pass-catching talent following Malik Nabers' torn ACL. With a new coach leading the way, the future looks to be bright in New York.
