The Detroit Lions activated Malcolm Rodriguez from the physically unable to perform list, clearing the way for him to return to the lineup nearly one year after he tore his ACL.

Rodriguez, who opened the season on the physically unable to perform list, has been out since suffering the injury last Thanksgiving.

He returned to practice three weeks ago, and could make his season debut Sunday, Nov. 23, against the New York Giants.

Lions coach Dan Campbell indicated in his press conference Monday that Rodriguez would return this weekend. The Lions had to activate Rodriguez by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. roster deadline or return him to the PUP list for the rest of the season.

A sixth-round pick in 2022 who started 15 games as a rookie, Rodriguez is expected to contribute primarily on special teams and as a backup to starting linebackers Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes.

“It’ll be great (to get him back),” Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp said earlier this month. “I mean obviously guys have been coming and going all season long. But him, just like getting (Sione) Vaki back is huge. These guys are great players for us on special teams.”
