The emotions are hitting for Lionel Messi.
Argentina's star had the tears flowing down after his team lost the World Cup final against Spain on Sunday, July 19. He and his squad were unable to defend their title after winning it in 2022, falling just short once again.
With it being the final, the losing team had to stay on the pitch for the award presentation since it gets medals for finishing as the runner-up. Messi was the first person on his team to receive the medal on the stage, and after he walked off, he went toward the Argentina supporters in the crowd. That's where the tears came out as he looked at the fans still in the stands.
You can understand why Messi is emotional as 2026 is likely the soccer great's final World Cup appearance, although he hasn't officially confirmed that will be it.
In addition to his legendary club career, Messi has plenty of iconic moments while representing his nation. He led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup championship, and his 21 career World Cup goals is the second most all-time.
Messi was unable to score in the final against Spain, with Argentina held scoreless in a World Cup match for the first time since 2018.
