Lindsey Vonn makes striking statement in red bikini amid grueling recovery originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Lindsey Vonn has never been particularly interested in standing still. That apparently remains true even as the Olympic skiing legend continues working her way back from one of the most devastating injuries of her career.
Vonn shared a collection of photos from an action-packed seaside getaway Wednesday, offering fans a glimpse at paddleboarding, beach time, workouts and a nighttime motorbike ride. The 41-year-old appeared relaxed and confident throughout the vacation album, which arrived only weeks after she revealed that her ankle was still broken.
“Been on the move,” Vonn wrote on Instagram, adding sun, heart, dancing and prayer emojis.
One image immediately stood out. Vonn wore a bright red triangle bikini while balancing on a stand-up paddleboard, smiling with her hair pulled into a bun and a paddle in her hands.
The vibrant look was impossible to miss, but the story behind it made the photo considerably more meaningful.
Lindsey Vonn’s vacation comes after painful recovery
Vonn’s ability to stand on a paddleboard carries a different weight after what she endured at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The three-time Olympic medalist crashed only 13 seconds into her run in the women’s downhill final on Feb. 8. Vonn lost control, flipped through the air and was eventually transported by helicopter to a hospital.
Doctors determined that she had suffered a complex tibia fracture. The accident occurred just one week after she had completely ruptured her ACL during a World Cup race.
Five months later, Vonn told People at the ESPY Awards that her recovery remained far from complete.
“It’s been a very slow process,” Vonn said. “It’s been five months since I’ve been able to actually go to the gym in a somewhat meaningful way. And walking is actually still really hard for me. My ankle is still broken.”
Vonn has not publicly indicated whether each vacation activity was cleared by her doctors. The photos nevertheless provided another visual marker of how far she has come since the frightening crash.
Vonn shows confidence during active getaway
The red paddleboarding look was only one part of Vonn’s vacation post. In another photo, she wore a black bikini with a life jacket while flashing a peace sign on the beach. A line of paddleboards could be seen behind her.
Vonn also included an image of herself riding a red motorbike through a city street at night. Another slide showed the former ski racer in workout attire, wearing a white Under Armour tank top and a Red Bull cap.
It was not the typical collection of quiet poolside vacation photos. Vonn appeared determined to remain active, even while acknowledging that her body is still recovering.
That determination has defined her journey since February.
Vonn told People that she spent an extended period using a wheelchair and crutches. She estimated that she was unable to walk without assistance for nearly three and a half months.
“I got very emotional when I was able to walk on my own,” Vonn said.

Vacation photos tell a deeper story
Vonn’s red bikini naturally drew attention, but the most compelling part of the image was not the color or design. It was the fact that she was standing.
Only months earlier, Vonn had been airlifted away from an Olympic course with a complex fracture. She faced another long rehabilitation after already overcoming numerous injuries throughout her career. Now, she is back in the gym, spending time on the water and sharing moments of progress with her followers.
The vacation did not mean her recovery was complete. Vonn made that clear when discussing the condition of her ankle in July. Her latest update did, however, reveal that the injury has not taken away her appetite for movement or adventure.
For an athlete who built her career by charging fearlessly down mountains, that might be the most encouraging statement of all.
