As USC kicks off spring practice this week, the Trojans and Lincoln Riley have numerous question marks entering the 2025 season. Perhaps the most notable of those question marks is quarterback. After Miller Moss, who started the first nine games of the 2024 season for USC, transferred to Louisville earlier this offseason, the Trojans' most experienced player at the position is Jayden Maiava. Maiava started USC's final four games last year, going 3-1 with 15 total touchdowns and six interceptions.
During the offseason, the Trojans also added Utah transfer (by way of Washington and Cal Poly) Sam Huard, as well as five-star freshman Husan Longstreet. While the plan is to have an open competition during spring and fall camp, Maiava has to be considered the favorite to win the job due to his experience in USC's system.
Following Tuesday's first practice of spring practice, head coach Lincoln Riley discussed Maiava's mindset this offseason.
"You hear the term that someone's their own, you know, toughest critic," Riley said. "[Maiava is] honestly a guy, sometimes he can almost over do it.
"He's not one that you really worry about getting complacent, or not wanting to work on the areas that he knows he needs to attack . . . for him, sometimes it's more like, don't be so hard on yourself. We'll be plenty hard on you.
"I think for him, it's a little bit that balance."
Maiava had some great moments in 2024, but also some very bad ones. USC fans are hoping that if Maiava wins the starting job, he can take a step forward in 2025 and emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten.
