Ligue 1 Plus to become sole broadcaster of France’s top-flight
At the start of this season, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) launched Ligue 1 Plus in order to broadcast its own league, Ligue 1. It was a decision taken following DAZN’s decision to pull out of their five-year deal after just one season, citing the unprofitability of the deal.
However, there remained one traditional broadcaster, beIN Sports, who broadcast what has been called the ‘Ninth match’, essentially the second-biggest encounter of the gameweek, usually broadcast at 17:15 on a Saturday (local time).
However, beIN Sports does not wish to continue their deal beyond the end of this season, and they have already written to LFP Media in order to inform them of that decision, L’Équipe understands. Rather than trying to sell the ‘Ninth match’ elsewhere, it will be taken on by Ligue 1 plus, meaning that all of the matches in France’s top flight will be broadcasted on the channel.
The change will see an increase in the price of a subscription to the Ligue 1 Plus service. The price as of next season will go up to €19.99, L’Équipe understands.
