Sep. 26—JAMESTOWN — Liam Frey didn't waste any time on Friday.
One minute into the Jamestown High School football team's tilt against Devils Lake, the Blue Jay senior running back had already scored the first of his three touchdowns.
Unfortunately, for Frey and the Jays, the game didn't end as well as it started.
The Blue Jays fell 41-27 to Devils Lake to put their record at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in West Region play. Jamestown will be back at its home venue of Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium next week hosting Dickinson in the 2025 Homecoming game.
Jamestown held its initial 7-0 lead for about two and a half minutes — then Bryar Exner got loose.
Exner went 14 yards to make it 7-6 Blue Jays. Mason Palmer's PAT made it 7-7 with 8:32 left in the opening quarter.
After that, Jamestown never regained the lead.
With 9:27 left to play in the half, Palmer, a third-year starting quarterback for the Firebirds, connected with Max Palmer on a 25 yard touchdown pass. Jamestown did score before the half was out, on a 5 yard run by Frey but a missed extra point gave Devils Lake the advantage headed into the break
In the second half, Devils Lake outscored the Jays 27-14.
Unofficially, Devils Lake put up 488 yards of total offense. Palmer was 17-of-24 for 211 yards passing.
Frey headed up the Jays' 264 yards on the ground while sophomore quarterback Karson Schmidt went 7-of-18 for 75 yards through the air. Schmidt, now in his third week as the starting quarterback, threw for one touchdown and two interceptions.
