Lewis Hamilton had a dominant performance in Sprint Qualifying, where he had set the fastest time in all three segments to claim pole position by a razor-thin margin of 0.011 seconds over Kimi Antonelli. In the sprint race he lost the lead to the Italian, but it was what happened off-track that left fans talking.
The M&S fan stage event on July 2 brought together Hamilton, George Russell, Lando Norris, Oliver Bearman, and Arvid Lindblad ahead of the British Grand Prix. Sky Sports commentator David Croft was hosting, and the mood was light. Hamilton had been in good spirits all weekend, and Croft acknowledged it directly on stage:
“Lewis, both on and off the track, you are a much happier man this year, and for everyone present, it’s great to see.” The audience erupted in applause, prompting Russell to seize the microphone and press the moment even further.
“Is that because it’s a fast car or new girlfriend?” Russell asked. The crowd erupted. Hamilton looked genuinely caught off guard, covering his eyes and laughing. Croft piled on immediately: “You know why he’s asking. He just needs to know if Kimi needs two towels or not.” – a reference to the Monaco moment where Kardashian inadvertently picked up a towel meant for Antonelli after the champagne podium celebrations, a clip that spread across social media fast enough that Mercedes eventually presented Antonelli with a replacement towel embroidered “To Kimi from Kim.”
Hamilton bent over laughing and pointed toward the side of the stage. He recovered, pivoted to a fairly sincere tribute to Ferrari – crediting the team’s welcome during a tough debut season and the gradual payoff of hard work – before landing the line the crowd was waiting for: “And of course, of course, it’s Kim.”
The reaction was immediate and loud. For a driver who, just five months ago, was firmly deflecting any questions about his personal life, it was a meaningful shift. Hamilton had spoken after Monaco about how much it meant to have Kardashian there supporting him, and the pair have since been spotted together everywhere from a Broadway theatre to a family birthday dinner at Nobu Malibu. Kardashian officially hard-launched the relationship on Instagram in June, and Hamilton apparently felt comfortable enough at Silverstone to do his own version of that – in front of a few thousand fans and a Sky Sports microphone.
The timing is not bad, either. Hamilton currently occupies third place in the Drivers‘ Championship, trailing Antonelli. The seven-time world champion has won at Silverstone nine times – more than any other driver in history – and a potential tenth triumph this weekend would simultaneously mark Ferrari’s 250th victory in Formula 1. On and off the track, Hamilton appears to be having a very good week.
