Ty Simpson will be one of multiple players reporting to the Los Angeles Rams’ rookie minicamp that starts May 8. Even though Simpson will not immediately take on a starting role, the franchise has some early hopes for the No. 13 overall pick.

“I checked with somebody with the team about Rams minicamp. What do they want to see from Simpson? They said, ‘Just command of the operation, ability to adjust process information.’ Those aspects are going to be his superpowers with the Rams. He’s not the huge, Matthew Stafford[-like] arm. He wins mentally,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on “SportsCenter” on Saturday.

“That’s why they like him. Les Snead, the GM, told me he likes Simpson’s ‘central nervous system.’ He just has the ability to figure out the game with his mind. So, they want to see that on a full display.”

With rookie minicamps in full swing, here’s a look at what Raiders and Rams will be evaluating with Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson.

Simpson Lacks Experience As A Starting Quarterback

One concern with Simpson is his lack of starting experience during his collegiate career. He served as a backup to Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe for the first three seasons of his career with Alabama. Simpson became a full-time starter in 2025 as a senior, starting in 15 games for the Crimson Tide.

Simpson completed 305 of 473 pass attempts for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns across those 15 games. He threw just five interceptions to set a program record for the lowest career interception percentage (0.96%).

Simpson will be a backup to 2025 NFL Most Valuable Player, Matthew Stafford. Therefore, this season with the Rams is a chance for the rookie quarterback to learn from a decorated veteran before developing into a starting quarterback.
