DANVILLE — In the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game with Rantoul, the Post 210 Speakers baseball team just needed some good fortune to happen.

Rantoul just took a 3-2 lead, but the Speakers needed something to get started in the bottom of the inning.

It started when Easton Barney hit a pop in front of the plate that the catcher could not see and dropped for a foul. Barney would then get a single to become the first runner in the inning.

“I just got another opportunity and reset and was able to get a single,” Barney said. “They put a couple of runs out there and we had to lock in and get some hits and runs in and we did that.”

The Speakers made the most of that at-bat and would score six runs in the inning to go on to a 8-4 win.

“That is what good teams do is make you pay when you make mistakes,” Post 210 coach Brent Hart said. “If you give them extra outs, you make them pay and that is what we did today.”

Barney would score on a double by Cole Miller and Miller would come in on a pop single by Bryson Houchens. The ball was hit high in the air and three Rantoul fielders could not see it as it successfully hit the ground.

“I also slipped in the box, so it was even worse,” Houchens said. So I was happy it went down and we were able to score some runs after that. We didn’t want to lose to those guys and we had a lot better at bats in the inning and we had to grind out the at-bats.”

Matthew Darling had a single to move Houchens to third before Pedro Rangel V got up and got single to bring in Houchens. Darling and Rangel would score on a wild pitch, Marvin Davis III had a walk and was brought in on a double by Riglee Hart.

Rangel started the game and had eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Jaxon Spicer got the win in relief, going 1 2/3 innings with one strikeouts, Xander Wilson ended the game with two strikeouts in the seventh.

“We pulled him because it was a bullpen game for us and we had a couple of guys on,” Hart said. “We are not looking for at-bats where there is leverage on the pitcher. I have coached five since he was eight. He’s a game and that’s what you want .. guys who play hard and compete and that’s what we are all about.”

Rantoul also had a strong starter in Holden Cargo. He pitched four innings with seven strikeouts and was holding the Speakers to four hits.

“I feel we were a little slow coming out of the gate and Cargo is a good pitcher that throws 84-86,” Hart said. “He’s a Kankakee Community College guy and he knows how to throw it. I felt that we had some great at-bats. We just need to work on the baserunning and I think we are a state contender.

“Hats off to Cargo, he is a good arm, he is one of the best arms in the division. For Rantoul to go far, it will be on Cargo for the season.”

The Speakers were coming off a trip to the King City Classic in Tupelo, Miss. and now prepare for the weekend where they will host the TB Classic.

“Mississippi had some good players and we saw some good arms,” Houchens said. We are just ready to swing wood at the tournament to get ready and put some good at-bats together.”
