Jul. 21—ST. JAMES — Senior legion playoffs are underway for southwest Minnesota baseball teams and one club that is still alive is Luverne.
Luverne's Legion 18U team opened the American Sr. Legion Division II Southwest Sub-State tournament with a 5-3 win over Mankato Loyola on July 16 thanks to a Carter Sehr two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and a seven-strikeout pitching performance from Josh Hansen.
Luverne then took a narrow 6-5 loss to Springfield the next day in a game the squad nearly came back and tied late but couldn't quite capitalize with runners in scoring position.
That Springfield loss moved Luverne into the elimination bracket against Slayton, who lost to Sleepy Eye in the main bracket before bouncing back with an 8-1 win over Windom in its first double elimination game.
Despite only collecting two hits in the game, Slayton drew nine walks and took advantage of six Windom errors. That win for Slayton set up the clash Saturday with Luverne in a game that ended in comeback fashion for Luverne.
Slayton took a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning before Luverne started to rally.
Maddux Domagala and Blake Sauer drew walks and then Jaxon Lais singled to load the bases for Sehr. Sehr took the 2-1 pitch and hit a pop fly over the left field fence for a grand slam to tie the game.
Slayton managed to get two outs after that, hoping to send the game to extra innings. But back-to-back walks that followed an earlier single from Hansen again loaded the bases for Luverne.
Domagala stepped up to the plate again and drew a game-winning walk to complete Luverne's comeback.
On top of his game-tying grand slam in the seventh, Sehr struck out five Slayton batters through five innings. Maddox Miller earned the win though thanks to two innings with zero earned runs at the end of the game.
Luverne (16-5) moved on in the elimination bracket where it'll face host St. James Friday. St. James is coming off a win over Mankato Loyola after a prior loss to Sleepy Eye in the main bracket.
For Slayton, Dugan Kluis and Danny Larson each had two hits as the team finished with 10. Tristan Behrends pitched six innings with two strikeouts and five earned runs allowed.
