Kurt Van Dyke, a prominent surfing legend whose family helped pioneer the sport, has died at age 66 after being murdered in a violent home invasion in Costa Rica, according to multiple reports.
The incident occurred on Saturday, February 14 in Hone Creek, Cahuita, Talamanca, where Van Dyke owned the Hotel Puerto Viejo, local outlet Tico Times reported.
Van Dyke and his girlfriend shared an apartment together where they were confronted by at least two men who threatened them with firearms, the outlet added. The perpetrators allegedly confined the couple to a room where they stole several valuables before attacking Van Dyke, and then fleeing the scene in two vehicles, one of them stolen from the property.
Investigators stated that a preliminary investigation found signs of asphyxiation and multiple stab wounds on Van Dyke’s body, which was found under a bed covered with a sheet, according to local outlet CR Hoy. The woman survived the ordeal and was found zip-tied by first responders.
No arrests have been made in the case.
According to People, Van Dyke was known for decades as the owner of the local hotel, which catered to a lot of tourists and surfers. He was also a well-known presence in the local surf community, earning the nickname “King.”
His father, Gene Van Dyke, pioneered the sport in the 1950s and his mother, Betty Van Dyke, was a fifth-generation farmer in California who went on to be the first female competitive surfing champion in the world, according to Us Weekly.
In a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle, Kurt’s brother, Peter Van Dyke, called Kurt “a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody. Kurt would never hurt anybody, and he was always there when you needed him. Everyone that he met knew this about him.”
