Carlton Flatt, the legendary Brentwood Academy (TN) coach who led the Eagles to 10 state titles in 34 seasons, died early Monday morning. He was 82.

Flatt had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2017.

Born on April 22, 1943, Flatt's career with the Eagles began a dynasty as he started the program that became one of Tennessee's winningest.

Flatt was a Cumberland High School alum and a standout at Austin-Peay, earning numerous all-conference honors. He started Brentwood Academy's football program in 1970.

Just five seasons in, the Eagles won their first state championship. Under Flatt, the Eagles compiled a record of 355-68-3, had six unbeaten seasons and compiled three different 30-plus game winning streaks.

They won state championships under Flatt in 1974, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1995, 1996 and in 2006, his final season.

Flatt is all well-known for taking the TSSAA to the Supreme Court twice. The case revolved around recruiting violations in 1997, with Flatt and the TSSAA having a legal battle that lasted 11 years.

While the Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of the TSSAA as the state's ultimate enforcer of recruiting rules, the case led the association to rewrite its recruiting rules so they would be easier to enforce and to determine whether violations had occurred.
