Jalen Brunson drew massive praise from Dick Vitale after the New York Knicks star led his team to a 105-95 Game 1 victory over the San Antonio Spurs to open the 2026 NBA Finals.

In his first career Finals game, Brunson led all scorers with 30 points on 12-for-31 shooting from the field in 37 minutes, which included several clutch buckets down the stretch to steal homecourt advantage from the Spurs. By doing so, Vitale believes that Brunson has cemented his legacy as an all-time Knicks great.

“Jalen Brunson is the greatest scoring guard in the history of Knicks basketball,” Vitale posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“The Knicks with a major road W over the Spurs as JALEN BRUNSON did what he has done all year made clutch shots to lead Knicks,” he said in a separate post. “I said before series started Knicks will win the 2026 NBA championship in 6 games. Brunson had 30 points & was MR CLUTCH late in the game.”

The Knicks had quite a scare on Wednesday night when Brunson subbed out and headed to the locker room late in the first period, following a collision with Harrison Barnes, who fell toward Brunson after crashing into Landry Shamet.

Brunson came back in the second quarter but had his ankle stepped on by Luke Kornet after shooting a floater. This may be the reason why the Knicks guard was so upset with referee Scott Foster after the final buzzer sounded.
