The Los Angeles Lakers blew a golden opportunity to take control of their first-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday in Game 3. The contest was close throughout and was tied at 103 with just over four minutes to go, but they fell apart completely at the seams afterward, leading to a 116-104 loss.
Once again, the Lakers lacked offensive balance. But LeBron James, after two subpar games to start this series, had what seemed like a vintage performance on Friday. He scored 38 points on 13-of-21 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from 3-point range while adding 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.
His 38 points were the most in NBA playoff history by a player who is at least 40 years of age. The previous record was held by Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Unfortunately for Los Angeles, Luka Doncic, who was suffering from a stomach bug, scored just 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting, and Austin Reaves, as he did in the first two games, was subpar. While he scored 20 points, he made only seven of his 18 shot attempts.
Game 4 on Sunday afternoon will be a very important swing game for L.A. A win would tie the series and give it home-court advantage, but a loss would put it one step away from death.
