By suiting up Saturday against the Magic, LeBron James not only became the player with the most regular-season games in NBA history... he also became the winningest. The Lakers' win against Orlando, courtesy of a Luke Kennard three-pointer, was the 1,074th of his career in the regular season. Adding his 184 playoff wins (tops all-time), three play-in victories, and one NBA Cup final triumph brings his combined total to 1,229 - one more than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 1,228 across regular season and postseason.
It should be noted that Abdul-Jabbar still holds the record for most regular-season wins (though that, too, is likely to fall next year barring a surprising LeBron James retirement) and he boasts a better winning percentage in both the regular season (68.85% vs. 64.58%) and the postseason (64.98% vs. 63.01%).
James and Abdul-Jabbar are two of only eight players with over 1,000 wins in NBA history. The others are Tim Duncan, Robert Parish, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Tony Parker, and Derek Fisher - each of them with at least 18 seasons under their belts, mostly spent with good to great NBA teams. All eight players finished with a regular-season winning percentage above 62%.
"The best thing you can have for your teammates is availability," James said yesterday after the game vs. Orlando. "And I try to be available throughout my career, two decades-plus … you know, to my guys. And … you know that’s just a byproduct of it."
Availability, of course, is easier talked about than delivered. Though LeBron has only once played the full 82-game schedule, he has already outlasted the second-most tenured NBA player of his draft class (Carmelo Anthony) by four seasons, all while continuing to accumulate records in the process.
