LeBron James’s decision about his next move weighed on him just as much as his fans.

The 41-year-old NBA superstar’s agent, Rich Paul, opened up about the mental toll the basketball legend faced while deciding where he’d play for his record-breaking 24th season after wrapping up his eight-season run with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“You can see from the end of the season ... the emotional attachments and how hard it is to go away from a Miami and go away from a Cleveland,” the CEO of Klutch Sports Group said on his Game Over podcast with Max Kellerman on Friday, July 24. “Who wouldn’t want to play with Steph Curry and Draymond Green?”

“I’m seeing the emotional roller coaster every single day,” Paul added of LeBron, who he confirmed was deciding between Philadelphia, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat and the Golden State Warriors.

LeBron was selected first overall by the Cavs in the 2003 NBA Draft at age 18, playing for the team from 2003 to 2010. He then went to the Heat from 2010 to 2014 before taking his talents back to Cleveland from 2014 to 2018, and then played for the Lakers from 2018 until he said he would not return to Los Angeles for his 24 season, instead announcing his move to the 76ers on July 24.

Paul explained that James’ decision was difficult, toggling between joining a new team such as the Sixers or Warriors or returning to the Cavaliers or Heat.

The sports agent noted that the 76ers became a lot more enticing when they acquired Jaylen Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics on July 1.

“... Home is home [in Cleveland]. Miami is Miami. It’s Pat [Riley]. ... I think that everyone was at some point leading the race,” he said. “Ultimately, Philadelphia makes a move and then boom! Now you got Jaylen Brown... Now hold on, wait a minute now. This looks a lot different.”

The longtime Lakers star said on X that he made his decision with a shot at a fifth championship in mind. He will sign a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option, according to ESPN.

Paul said on his podcast that James went “back and forth” various times Thursday before making his decision.

“I’m happy for [James],” he said. “He’s made his choice. He’s happy with it... I think the city of Philly is going to embrace him.”

James spent the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he won a title in the 2020 NBA COVID bubble season. The Lakers reached the Western Conference semifinals in the playoffs last season, but were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in four games.

The NBA icon told reporters afterward he would “take time to recalibrate and look over the season and see what’s best for my future.”
