Fans from Northeast Ohio had mixed reactions to the news that Akron native LeBron James isn't heading back home.
"I regret that he ain't coming home to Cleveland, but this will always be his hometown," said Fred Slack of Akron.
James agreed on Friday, July 24 to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, his agency Klutch Sports Group confirmed on social media. James will join the Sixers on a two-year, $8 million contract, which includes a player option, agent Rich Paul told ESPN.
"We got Bron!" said an excited Brandon Knowles, who was manning the 4 Bros & a Sis lemonade stand at the Northeast Regional Firefighter Challenge Classic in downtown Akron.
Knowles isn't from Philadelphia, nor is he a Sixers fan ‒ but he is a LeBron James fan. Wherever James goes, Knowles will follow.
"I'm happy he didn't retire," Knowles said. "Give it a year or two, they will win a championship ‒ even though it should have been Cleveland. But I'm happy he's still playing."
Cincy Snider said she was disappointed James didn't come back home, but added, "We love him."
Other area fans, however, weren't as supportive of the self-proclaimed "Just a Kid from Akron."
Jason Olson of Streetsboro said he hasn't been a fan of James since "The Decision," when the NBA superstar left Cleveland to play for the Miami Heat in 2010.
"I would've liked to see him come to the Cavs," Olson said. "We need someone to run our offense. But, in all honestly, I haven't liked him since 'The Decision,' so let him go. Who cares?"
Nick Corpas, co-owner of Akron Family restaurant located at 250 W. Market St., said in honor of the news he will be making a "Philly omelet" dedicated to James.
"I wish LeBron was coming here, but I'm excited for him in his new move to Philadelphia," Corpas said. "I already started to come up with some specials for him. I think we are going to do a 'Philly' steak omelet in his honor. We will follow him wherever he goes and cheer him on."
