Lead Celtics Insider Confidently Shoots Down Giannis Antetokounmpo Rumors originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, it's getting harder to envision Giannis Antetokounmpo playing for the Boston Celtics next season.
Several recent rumors indicate the Celtics and Miami Heat are the favorites to trade for the Milwaukee Bucks star. Some rumors even suggest Boston has made a formal trade rumor, but ESPN's Brian Windhorst refuted those reports on Monday.
Windhorst also claimed Antetokounmpo is "focused" on joining the Heat. The Boston Globe's Gary Washburn, one of the top insiders covering the Celtics, echoed Windhorst's reporting while confidently predicting Antetokounmpo won't land in Boston.
“I don’t think he's going to be a Celtic, and that’s just from what I’m hearing," Washburn said during a Monday appearance on NBC Sports Boston. "I think the Celtics are gauging what it would take to get Giannis to Boston and trying to figure out whether they want to move Jaylen Brown.
“ ... I do think Miami has the edge on this, but I do think Boston is kinda sniffing around. ... What is exactly Milwaukee looking for? Who is the third team involved? Because it’s gonna have to be a third team involved.
“ ... There’s a lot of questions here that need to be solved in the next week. I do think something is gonna happen by the draft. ... But I don’t think the chances are that he’s coming [to Boston]. And I don't think the Celtics are shopping Jaylen Brown in this deal. I think they're trying to figure out how to get him without Jaylen."
Perhaps Antetokounmpo ultimately gets traded to the Celtics. But as time drags on, the Heat are looking like the clear favorites.
Regardless, with the 2026 NBA Draft looming on June 23, it's fair to assume the Bucks want the Antetokounmpo situation resolved before then.
