Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin says if striker Marko Lazetic had a prolific scoring record prior to his move to Pittodrie "we never could afford him".
Lazetic, 21, arrived on a four year-deal in the summer from AC Milan for an undisclosed fee.
The Serbia Under-21 international struggled for goals before his Dons switch, but has been a bright light in an Aberdeen side which has had problems in attacking areas, netting four times including a double in their 3-3 draw with St Mirren in midweek.
Speaking prior to Saturday's Premiership trip to Dundee, Thelin was asked what it was about Lazetic that convinced him to bring him to the north east.
He said: "First of all the profile, the characteristics - his acceleration, his hard work, his arriving to the box. Before he didn't score but he was in a lot of good goalscoring opportunities.
"With his qualities, if he had scored we never could afford him so sometimes you need to go for the potential – his speed, his presence on the pitch but most importantly we saw there was some value there if we can help put him on the right place on the pitch and he keeps working hard.
"We saw that if we keep working and believing in yourself he can do it and keep arriving to the right areas. He has to be humble and keep working and improving."
Meanwhile, Thelin has tipped goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov to bounce back after the Bulgaria international endured a difficult night during the draw with St Mirren.
He said: "I think we have to see the bigger picture here. I don't know how many clean sheets he has this last period, there are a lot of games and sometimes moments can happen in a game and it feels not good for anyone.
"But we share the responsibility and in some games you are not performing so good but you win the game because you have this extra save.
"Like St Mirren away last time, Marko did an amazing thing [scoring the winner] and Dimitar made some really great saves so that is football, I am 100% convinced that he is going to show up on Saturday again and be really good and stable."
