It's now April, which means the draft is this month! We're so close to not having to speculate anymore and actually knowing who the newest Washington Commanders will be.
Since the conclusion of the 2025 season, we've gone over plenty of different mock drafts. Most mock drafts have had the Commanders taking a defender at No. 7, but some have also had the team picking an offensive weapon for Jayden Daniels. One thing that hasn't been mocked much is the Commanders trading up, mostly because the team doesn't have much draft capital to begin with.
However, Rob Rang of FOX Sports believes the Commanders could still make a bold move up if they like a player enough. In Rang's latest mock, he has the Commanders trading up to No. 3 and selecting Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
Regarding this potential move, Rang offered the following:
As Rang mentioned, the Commanders could feel the need to trade up for Love if they really want him. The Tennessee Titans are sitting at No. 4, and they've frequently been connected to Love this offseason.
Since the Commanders only have six picks in 2026, and no second rounder, Rang mentions that they may have to include next year's first-round pick as well. That would certainly be a bold choice, but the Commanders are hoping to contend in 2026, so next year's first rounder hopefully won't be a high pick.
Love has the potential to completely transform an offense. Plus, the running back already mentioned his desire to play with Jayden Daniels in the NFL.
In 2025, Love was a Heisman finalist after rushing for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Notre Dame product also rushed for 1,000+ yards in 2023 and provides value as both a receiver and blocker as well. Would the Commanders actually trade up for a running back at this point? It may not be likely, but it would be an exciting move for sure.

If the Commanders are really serious about protecting Jayden Daniels, they’ll insulate him with a dynamic runner and won’t risk losing the opportunity to draft him by waiting until they are on the clock at No. 7 overall. With just six draft picks in 2026 (including no second-round selection), Washington would have to be bold, indeed, to make this move, likely having to trade not only this year’s first round pick but next year’s, as well.
