Jan. 31—CULLMAN — The Hartselle boys were looking for a sweep of their hated rival Friday but ultimately came up short.
Facing off against Class 6A No. 7 Cullman on the road, the Tigers were defeated 52-48.
"We got down, and I thought we did a great job of battling back to make it a game late," Hartselle head coach Josh Golden said. "They really hurt us on the glass. I think if we had rebounded better, it could've been a different game."
It was a rock fight for the first three quarters as the Tigers managed just 27 points and trailed 39-27 going into the fourth.
"They're really good defensively, and I think we pressed too hard at times. We didn't shoot it awful, but we had too many empty possessions where we didn't get the look we wanted," Golden said.
Hartselle picked it up in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to six points on three different concessions and cutting it to three points with 15 seconds. The Tigers, which dropped to 13-14 with the loss, were unable to finish though, an issue that has plagued the young team throughout the season.
"It's been up and down all year. We have some great marquee wins this year over Austin, Muscle Shoals and Cullman the first time. Then you look at our losses, we've only had two losses by double digits," Golden said. "We only have one senior and eventually this group is going to have to learn how to win those close games."
Aiden Pointer and Rhett Boyd each scored 10 points to lead Hartselle. Gray Bennich and Reed Springer both had eight.

Hartselle girls 43, Cullman 39: After missing the first meeting between the two teams in December with an injury, Hartselle's Hannah Burks made her presence felt in the rematch.
The junior led the Tigers with 14 points.
"It took me a while to get back to where I wanted to be, but I feel good now," Burks said. "I really like the way this team is playing. It feels like we're peaking at the right time."
The two teams were tied at 11 after the first quarter and 20-20 at halftime, but Hartselle pushed ahead 30-28 at the end of the third quarter and never looked back.
Karson Boyer and Elsie Boyd each added eight points for the Tigers, who improved to 18-9.
