LAPEL—Even as the world of college recruiting becomes more complicated and convoluted, it is still possible for the top tier of players to find the right fit.
That was certainly the case for Lapel quarterback Devin Craig.
The school’s all-time passing leader and one of the state’s most prolific ever, Craig inked his national letter of intent Thursday afternoon to attend Georgetown College to continue his academic and football careers next year.
Founded in 1829, Georgetown is an NAIA school located near Lexington, Kentucky. The Tigers have a rich tradition of football excellence with over 80 NAIA All-Americans over the years and the school has a strong academic record.
But for Craig, the strongest selling point for the school was the family atmosphere projected by the coaching staff and the program.
“The coaches, they really helped make me decide to go there,” he said. “Even during games when I played bad, I knew (my family) would still be there for me.”
Prior to the age of NIL, the transfer portal, and extended player eligibility, there would likely have been opportunities at bigger name schools for Craig, who threw for over 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns in his Lapel career.
But after leading the Bulldogs to three sectional titles in four years and the school’s first regional championship last fall, his coach believes Georgetown is the right fit.
“Georgetown is getting a heck of a quarterback. Our community has had the enjoyment over four years of watching him play,” Lapel coach Tim Miller said. “I’ve always loved Georgetown the College, so I’m happy that Devin is going to play there. Hopefully, he’ll have a chance to play for a national championship at some point.”
It should come as no surprise that the family dynamic was the biggest draw for the Lapel quarterback, whose family never missed a game at Lapel.
While his parents Brandon and Brandy were supportive, there was perhaps no more vocal supporter than older brother and former Lapel basketball standout Griffin Craig. He was on hand – as he has always been – Thursday for the signing and expressed his pride in what his brother had accomplished.
“I’m around him all the time whether he likes it or not and I get to see all the work he puts in on the field and off it,” Griffin, a basketball coach with Lapel, said. “It means a lot to him, it means a lot to all the kids here, and it’s bigger than him. It’s awesome for him to see all that hard work pay off, but it’s also good for the younger kids in school to see that hard work pay off.”
The All-State quarterback, who also averages 13 points per game for the Lapel basketball team, will head to Kentucky in August to begin the next phase of his athletic career and is a likely selection for the IFCA North-South All-Star game, which is played earlier in the summer.
He has yet to declare an area of study, but is ready to get started with the Tigers.
“Just knowing that I have a place that I’ll call home, it’s nice,” he said. “They basically said that the best guy is going to play.”
