FOWLERVILLE – After capturing regional semifinal wins, the Lansing Sexton and Chelsea boys basketball programs met in the regional final for the second season in a row.
In last year's first meeting, Sexton star Keyshawn Summerville sent the J-Dubbs to the state quarterfinals on a buzzer-beater from beyond half court.
This time around, Sexton once again had the lead heading into the fourth quarter. But some clutch shots down the stretch put the Bulldogs on top, and solid late-game execution helped Chelsea avenge last season's loss, eliminating Sexton from the tournament with a 51-45 win.
"I'm beyond proud of them, proud of my seniors, and we had a good run, but the better team won tonight," Sexton coach Deleon Dearing said. "We have to take pride in defense, and we cheated a couple times and (Chelseas) hit big shots, and that's a part of the game."
Summerville led the J-Dubbs with 21 points, while senior guard Willie Brown added seven points for Sexton. Freshman guard Drew Cabana led Chelsea with 16 points, while senior guard Buck Allen added 15 points for the Bulldogs.
Sexton's seniors — including Summerville, Willie Brown, K.J. Brown and brothers Mario and Markese Murray — were all a major part of reviving Sexton's program with a CAAC White title, back-to-back district titles, and back-to-back regional final appearances.
"These seniors, I can't even explain it," Dearing said. "Always willing to put the work in, good kids in the community, always willing to talk to kids and be a part of everything. They did a tremendous job being great kids and leaders at all times. I can't explain how proud I am of them and what they did for this program. They brought a spark back to the school and the program."
Sexton finishes its season with a 23-3 record. Chelsea will advance to the Division 2 state quarterfinals and face Romulus Summit Academy North on March 10.
