Oregon Ducks Coach Dan Lanning often leaves the decision-making in the college football world to lawmakers and administrators.
That was no different Aug. 3 when he was asked his opinion on the "Protect College Sports Act."
The sweeping, bipartisan bill is designed to stabilize the volatile state of college athletics and establish a federal framework for student-athlete compensation and NIL.
The SEC and Big Ten conferences are both in support of the bill. Lanning has occasionally spoken out about topics he feels strongly about, but he demurred during UO's annual media day.
"Not really my lane," Lanning said. "Just going to coach the team. It’s going to change. Football keeps changing, it’s going to keep changing."
Lanning was later asked if he thinks college football should have more stability or if the constant rule changes are a fun challenge, to which the coach gave a more detailed answer.
"I just think it's really hard when you create new rules, create new rules, create new rules and you can’t ever put the toothpaste back in the tube," Lanning said. "I think that’s a challenge. But I do enjoy the challenge of everybody has to adapt. Can we be the team that adapts better than anyone else? I just think the reality is that things will continue to change, so let’s continue to be a team that can adapt."
