For Texas Rangers fans who showed up at Globe Life Park on Sunday afternoon, watching Wyatt Langford hit majestic home runs (again) and Nathan Eovaldi look good on the mound must have made them feel good.
Langford stepped into the batter's box and slammed his fifth home run since coming off the Injured List. Eovaldi went six strong innings as the Rangers beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Sunday. With the victory, Texas picked up a series win.
Watching Langford do his thing yet again put a big smile on Rangers manager Skip Schumaker after Sunday's game.
“He’s back,” Schumaker said, according to MLB.com. “He's hitting them far, too. Those are not just wall-scrapers. He is a difference-maker in the lineup to what we envisioned coming into this season. And when Corey [Seager] gets back … I mean, those two guys are some of the best in the league.”
While we're talking about Langford and Eovaldi, the Rangers' faithful also saw Josh Jung connect for what would be the game-winning hit. Jung had himself quite a series against the Padres, going 6-for-12 with four runs scored.
Oh, and Langford? He looked pretty good. Langford went 7-for-13 with seven RBIs over the weekend series. Over his past 21 games, he’s hitting .345 with five doubles and 13 RBIs.
“Things are going right,” Langford said. “I just feel pretty good up there. Confident, seeing the ball well. Just trying to put together good at-bats. Sometimes you just feel good. Just want to try and keep it going as long as possible.”
Eovaldi was supposed to start on Saturday night, but left knee soreness caused him to move that start back to Sunday.
Things got shaky in the ninth inning with Jakob Junis taking the mound. All of Junis' trouble was caused by one person -- himself. In the end, Junis picked up his fifth save this season for Texas.
Schumaker said that Eovaldi gave him a good feeling about his Sunday start when they crossed paths on Sunday morning. “I saw him in the weight room this morning early on and he gave me, like, a ‘I’m good,’” Schumaker said. “That was good enough for me.”
Eovaldi told reporters that he didn't really know why his left knee was acting wonky on Saturday. He, though, was quite pleased with his performance, especially how his splitter was working against San Diego.
“I had a really good feel for the splitter,” Eovaldi said. “I loved the action on it. It's what I've been searching for. I thought [Rangers catcher Kyle Higashioka] did a great job back there behind the plate."
The Rangers were 2-for-7 with seven total runners left on base. As for the Padres, they are going to look at the RISP statistics and wonder what happened. San Diego was 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left six total runners on base.
With the victory, Texas goes to 37-40 this season and remains in third place in the American League West Division. San Diego, which hasn't had a really good season, falls to 39-37 and are in second place in the National League West Division.
After celebrating Sunday's win, the Rangers headed out of town for a 10-game road trip that includes stops in Miami, Toronto, and Cleveland. That series in Toronto is a four-game series.
