BATON ROUGE – LSU football projected starting quarterback Sam Leavitt is likely out for the remainder of spring practice according to Lane Kiffin.
The junior signal caller underwent a minor, scheduled procedure to remove a screw from the his foot that was placed there during his first surgery to repair his Lisfranc injury. Leavitt shared a photo of his foot wrapped in cast on his Instagram page.
Leavitt was not out with the rest of the team for its seventh practice.
SAME LEAVITT INJURY UPDATE What was new LSU football QB Sam Leavitt able to do in 1st spring practice?
When asked if he believed that Leavitt would be able to participate at any point for the remainder of LSU's spring drills, Kiffin said the quarterback is currently on crutches.
"I don't think he will (return to practice)," Kiffin said after practice Tuesday.
The first-year LSU coach did say that he and his staff went into recruiting the former Arizona State QB out of the transfer portal this offseason with full knowledge that he would be limited at best for spring practice.
"Nothing as a surprise, this was the timeline we expected," Kiffin said. "He had a screw removed yesterday and everything went well. This was something going into it that we were going to know that it was unfortunate that he was going to miss a lot of spring."
Through the first couple of weeks of practice, Leavitt has only been able to participate in individual and 7-on-7 drills. During team periods, Leavitt has stood behind the offensive formation, taking mental reps.
