Landon Donovan worked Fox’s World Cup coverage on Tuesday night as the United States Men’s National Team beat Bosnia and Herzegovina to advance to the Round of 16. Like most fans watching the game, Donovan was on the edge of his seat in the second half. Especially as USNMT played the final half-hour down a man following a questionable red card against Folarin Balogun.
Thankfully, Malik Tillman was able to find the back of the net on a free kick in the 82nd minute. That goal saved the day and maybe Landon Donovan’s hairline.
MORE: The race to televise the next World Cup is getting crowded
Following the game Donovan, seated beside his former USMNT teammate Clint Dempsy, joked that he was so stressed in the final 15 minutes that his fake hair was falling out.
That is a joke that one can only make when they’re secure in their own skin. Or, in this case, their own hair.
Whatever the condition – or origin – of Landon Donovan’s follicles, he can hold his head up high. He is the USMNT’s all-time leader in assists. He has represented his country in more games than anyone besides Cobi Jones. And he’s tied for the most goals in program history with the man sitting beside him in that video.
You can’t put a price on that kind of success, but if the Americans keep advancing it might cost Donovan his hair.
