The Minnesota Timberwolves weren't content running back with their same core in 2026-27.

After another playoff run that ended sooner than they had hoped, the team made some bold moves in a bid to get over the hump. Of course, as we now know, the biggest move the team was made was trading for star guard LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets.

To do so, the Wolves had to ship out Julius Randle, Naz Reid, and several other assets. The team felt like the current core had peaked, though, and big changes seemed necessary. On Tuesday, the team formally introduced Ball, as well as Josh Green, who should also play a nice role for the team this season.

LaMelo Ball 'excited' to join Ant

Immediately after the news of the trade, people were excited imagining a backcourt featuring Ball and Anthony Edwards. Edwards has cemented himself as one of the best players in the league, so having a competent backcourt mate could help him reach a new level.

"I've known Ant for a minute," Ball said. "We've been talking, everybody excited, we ready to get to work."

Of course, Ball and Edwards were two of the top prospects in the 2020 NBA Draft. Edwards was the top pick, while Ball was taken with pick No. 3.

"I feel like it’s God’s plan. I just leave it up to Him and feel extremely blessed," Ball said.

When at his best, Ball has also been in the best point guard discussions. The guard actually beat Edwards out for the Rookie of the Year Award and has one All-Star appearance on his resume. Availability has been a big issue, but when he's on the court, he's mostly been great.

While getting Ball was a huge addition by itself, the Timberwolves may not be done with additions. The team is reported to be in the running to land LeBron James, and Ball was asked if he had reached out to the legend yet.

"Yeah, whatever you're thinking," he told reporters with a laugh.

Can Timberwolves be contenders in 2026-27?

It will be exciting to see this new-look Timberwolves team this season. Point guard play has been a major concern for the Wolves for years now, and the hope is that Ball will help sort that out.

The team was also able to keep Ayo Dosunmu around after trading away Randle, and Dosunmu should be a key part of the guard rotation once again. There's also hope that Jaden McDaniels can take another step forward and become a star next to Edwards and Ball.

Obviously, what James decides will end up playing a large role. If the Wolves are able to convince the legend to come to Minnesota, it's hard not to see this team as a true contender. A lineup of Ball, Edwards, McDaniels, James, and Gobert would be hard for any team to match up against.
