Lakers trade rumor reveals Los Angeles’ interest in Bucks’ promising $140 million duo originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Things have started to heat up this offseason, with the Miami Heat recently trading Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, and several other assets to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the Los Angeles Lakers re-signing Austin Reaves to a four-year, $46 million-per-year extension.
Before those moves occurred, though, Hoopshype’s Michael Scotto fascinatingly reported that the Lakers were interested in acquiring the Bucks’ new promising $140 million duo via a blockbuster trade.
“Before Herro joined Milwaukee in the Antetokounmpo trade and theLos Angeles Lakers agreed to a four-year, $185 million max deal with Austin Reaves, the Lakers had trade discussions surrounding Herro and Kel’el Ware, which would’ve involved multiple first-round draft picks,” Scotto said last Sunday.
“In addition, the Brooklyn Nets also did due diligence and gauged the price tag for Herro, HoopsHype has learned.”
If the Lakers still view Herro as a potential trade target, there’s still a way for them to bring him to Los Angeles this summer. Essentially, there’s a strong belief that the proven 20.5 points per game scorer may never play a single game with Milwaukee, as re-routing him seems to be the most realistic scenario.
If the Lakers squeeze their way into a multi-team Antetokounmpo-focused deal involving Herro, they could be the team to begin the 2026-27 season with Herro on their roster, allowing the Lakers to make a run at the 26-year-old star guard. The same concept applies to Ware, which should be music to the Lakers’ ears.
After all, Los Angeles needs a big man in the worst way possible, and Ware’s ability to operate on the perimeter, do his part in the pick-and-roll to ensure the two-man operation runs smoothly, and protect the rim serviceably would be a breath of fresh air for the 17-time NBA champions.
Simply put, the Lakers still have time to land Herro and/or Ware before the Bucks and Heat finalize their previously reported trade.
