While it was touch-and-go for a brief period, the Miami Heat bested the Boston Celtics in the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes on Monday by sending several key assets and valuable future draft capital to the rebuilding Milwaukee Bucks for the two-time MVP.
The Heat may still not be satisfied with their roster at the start of the offseason, which explains why some have urged the franchise to make additional moves to improve their chances of dethroning the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference.
In former two-time NBA champion guard Mario Chalmers’ opinion, one of those moves should be poaching a 21-year-old point guard from Austin Reaves (the franchise's No. 2 scoring option) and the Los Angeles Lakers at some point during the summer.
“You could actually get Bronny (James) some real minutes at PG and keep developing him and let him learn from other guys, so I think it's a great move,”Chalmers said Thursday while discussing a scenario in which James and his father, LeBron, would join Antetokounmpo on the Heat.
Obviously, adding James’ four-time NBA champion father would be the far superior offseason move given his championship pedigree, mind-blowing longevity, and game-changing presence.
However, it’s still worth noting that the son of one of the best players to ever touch a basketball would have a golden opportunity to start fresh with an Eastern Conference franchise known for their superb player development.
Besides a few highlight reel-worthy moments here and there, the USC product hasn’t shown he’s capable of being a serviceable offensive threat in a league that’s challenging to survive in as a one-dimensional asset.
Receiving valuable mentorship from Erik Spoelstra could help change that time, which would do wonders for the former second-round pick once he’s on his own in the big leagues.
James, who averaged 2.9 points and 1.2 assists with the Lakers, would benefit tremendously from a change of scenery after two disappointing seasons with Los Angeles.
