For the third straight year, after a disappointing playoff exit by the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James sounded non-committal about his immediate future with them after their final game.
Following Game 5 versus the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, James was asked how much longer he will play in the NBA. He said he didn't have an answer and that he will determine that with the help of his family.
Everyone has heard this before from him, and many expect him to be back for at least one more season with the Purple and Gold. That was certainly the attitude that general manager Rob Pelinka seemed to sport during a press conference on Thursday.
He acknowledged that James will have high expectations as far as improving a roster that has a strong core but was too incomplete to get the job done against a big and imposing Minnesota frontline.
James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds a game while shooting 51.3% from the field and 37.6% from 3-point range during the regular season. He was named to the All-Star team for a record 21st time, and the acquisition of Luka Doncic took a lot of pressure off his shoulders, as Pelinka alluded to.
He has a player option for next season that he can decline in order to sign a somewhat longer new contract. According to a recent report, he will likely be willing to take a minor pay cut in order to make it easier for the Lakers to add more talent through free agency this summer.

Rob Pelinka: "LeBron is a GOAT, one of the GOATs of the game. And he’s been a completely selfless leader. We saw that in this playoff series, moving to playing more off the ball and committing more to the defensive end. I think it’s just a testament to his championship DNA and…
