On Tuesday afternoon, it was reported that LeBron James has chosen to move on from the Lakers, making him an unrestricted free agent entering the free agency period that starts tonight.

It ends an eight-year run in Los Angeles for James, which included a title in the 2019-20 season.

Shortly after the news came out, the team made a statement on social media.

Here's what the Lakers posted for LeBron on Tuesday, after he announced he was leaving in free agency:

"LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history," wrote Lakers governor Jeanie Buss. "We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers – including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold.

"We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.

"Thank you, LeBron."

This felt like a scenario that could have played out this offseason, but after months of speculation, we now know it's definite he will not return to the Lakers.

The team now seems to be in the hands of a new franchise player, Luka Doncic, whom the Lakers traded for last year, as they slowly introduced the transition into a post-LeBron era.

What's next for LeBron isn't exactly known at the moment, but with the Warriors viewed as one of the favorites to land him, he may not have to travel too far to his next destination.
