Feb. 9—The Iowa High School Athletic Association hosted the 2026 State Dual Tournament Saturday in Coralville.
Lake Mills qualified last Tuesday with a regional dual win over GTRA. The Bulldogs entered the tournament as the 3 seed and took on sixth-seeded Riverside, out of Oakland.
This Battle of the Bulldogs was a back-and-forth classic from the beginning. Many matches came down to the end, including a win at 113 where a last second takedown a win. Leads swung back and forth throughout, but the team trailed with two matches left, 28-23. Needing two wins, two seniors came up big getting a decision and a pin.
"Riverside gave us all we wanted and more," said coach Alex Brandenburg. "We lost a couple matches we thought we could win, but our kids wrestled as a team and got the job done."
After the victory, second-ranked Jesup, who hammered the Bulldogs 59-19 early in the season, was up next in the state dual semifinals. Although this dual was never in doubt for the J-Hawks, Lake Mills showed a strong improvement of that early loss by losing 48-22 this time around.
"Even though we still got beat by quite a bit, we improved the result in almost all the rematches compared to early in the year," Brandenburg said. "We are proud of how hard our kids competed."
The loss set up a third-place dual matchup against fourth-ranked Hinton. The dual had many good matches throughout, but Hinton capitalized in a few situations, as well as the Bulldogs having one wrestler get hurt during a close match. Even though the dual was fairly close throughout, the Blackhawks pulled away late for the 46-26 win.
"Hinton has a really good team, and they did what they needed to beat us," Brandenburgsaid. "We had some really good individual wins but we had enough mishaps to let the dual slip away."

State duals capped off what has been an amazing dual season for Lake Mills. With very few starters returning from last year, the team rose from being unranked in the preseason to getting fourth in class 1A out of 120 teams. Despite having a very tough schedule in which the team had a 5-6 record against top-15 ranked wins, the team finished 30-7.
"To me, this fourth-place finish is the most surprising thing in my eighteen years in Lake Mills," Brandenburg said, "These kids really bought into the team concept and did everything we asked of them and more this season."
