Just as the boys’ region is wide open, so is the girls’ region as several teams have a chance to hoist that trophy come March.
Locally, one of those teams will a great shot at lifting that trophy shouldn’t come as a surprise as it is the Southwestern Lady Warriors. The Warriors are 12-6 so far this season, with a 5-0 record in the region and a 2-0 record in district play. They have strong wins over Metcalfe County, West Jessamine, Franklin County, Corbin and Wayne County, and came very close to knocking off Holy Cross (Covington) before falling 62-58 in overtime. There are still games to go against Anderson County, Rockcastle County, Taylor County, Wayne County and Pulaski County twice. This is a young team without a senior on the roster, with Jaelyn Dye (15.7 points per game) leading the way. McKaila Monroe is also a strong member of a deep team, averaging 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 55.6% from the field.
The Lady Maroons of Pulaski County were off to a torrid start in their first season under Brian Miller, but that was before what was recently confirmed as a season-ending injury to star senior point guard Madeline Butcher. Pulaski is 13-7 so far, with wins over Danville Christian, Rockcastle County and Bowling Green. The Maroons still have games against Wayne County, Southwestern twice, Campbellsville, Metcalfe County and Lincoln County. Butcher was leading the team with 20.7 points per game before her injury, but that’s not the only talent that the Maroons feature. Senior Brooklyn Thomas, after taking last season off, is shining bright with 16.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, with sophomore Caroline Heist stepping in admirably at the point guard position and senior Hannah Murray stepping up in a leadership role.
The Somerset Lady Jumpers are still very young, going 7-13 so far this season. There have been some memorable moments however, such as a last-second victory over Clinton County and taking their rivals Pulaski County to the absolute limit in a 64-52 loss. The Jumpers still have games remaining against Mercer County, Wayne County and Southwestern. Senior Sophie Barnes is averaging 11.6 points per game but her return date with a knee injury is currently unknown. Junior Sarah White has seen a massive improvement with her game, leading the team with 11.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
Somerset Christian is still in the growing stages of their program with first-year head coach Devon York, going 6-7 so far. The Lady Cougars made their first-ever appearance in the 12th Region All “A” Championship game this season with a blowout victory over Burgin. They still have games remaining against Model, Mercer County and Somerset. Seventh grader Addison Durham has had a tremendous first season in varsity play, leading the team with 14.3 points per game and shooting 46.7% from three, while sophomore Marlee Durham averages 10.6 points per game.
