The Los Angeles Chargers are hoping that star wide receiver Ladd McConkey will make a swift return from a hamstring injury. McConkey, a former 2024 NFL draft second-round pick from the University of Georgia, and the Chargers start training camp in July. He suffered a left hamstring strain during Los Angeles' offseason program.
Hamstring injuries are difficult to heal, so McConkey will take his time coming back as he looks to enter the 2026 NFL season fully healthy. McConkey and the rest of the Chargers are learning a new offensive system under first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who was previously the Miami Dolphins' head coach.
"There's no reason to rush it and really push it and then have another setback and then you bleed into training camp," McConkey said."I feel like I've kind of had to switch my mindset. I can't be out there getting the physical reps, but like what can I do mentally to make up that gap."
McConkey is expected to play a big role in McDaniel's offense. He's entering his third NFL season and is hoping to replicate some of his record-breaking production from his 2024 rookie season where he posted 82 receptions for 1,149 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
Last season, McConkey recorded 66 receptions for 789 yards and six touchdowns. He helped the Chargers make the playoffs for a second straight season, but Los Angeles lost their opening playoff game to the New England Patriots in a poor offensive performance. The Chargers are hoping that bringing in McDaniel will help improve their postseason success. In order for the Chargers to have a better year, they'll need a healthy Ladd McConkey.
For now, McConkey does not have serious concern about his injury. However, his status will be one to monitor as Los Angeles nears training camp.
