Kyren Williams might be one of the most underrated running backs in the league, quietly going about his business and making a living in the end zone. The Los Angeles Rams star had himself another great performance against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, rushing for 78 yards on 15 carries and scoring two touchdowns.
That put him over the 1,000-yard mark on the season, giving him 1,030 yards with three games remaining. It’s his third straight 1,000-yard season, making him only the fourth Rams running back ever to have such a streak.
The others are Eric Dickerson, Marshall Faulk and Steven Jackson. Dickerson and Faulk, of course, are Pro Football Hall of Famers, while Jackson is the franchise’s all-time leader in rushing yards.
Todd Gurley had some outstanding seasons with the Rams but even he never had three straight 1,000-yard seasons; he had years with 1,106 yards, 1,305 yards and 1,251 yards, but 885-yard and 857-yard seasons in 2016 and 2018 prevented him from having such a streak like Williams’.
Historically, Williams is one of just 33 players all-time to record three seasons with at least 1,000 yards rushing and 10 rushing touchdowns (not consecutively). LaDainian Tomlinson is the all-time leader with eight seasons of 1,000 yards and 10 scores on the ground, with Derrick Henry, Adrian Peterson and Emmitt Smith owning seven such seasons.
Williams needs 270 yards in the final three games to set a new career-high for rushing yards in a season, which currently stands at 1,299 in 2024.
