While speaking on The Lounge podcast, Youmans recalled a Thursday night with the Dallas Cowboys when he was originally set to host pregame coverage. Instead, he was pulled aside mid-show and told he would be calling the game from the booth — stepping into live NFL play-by-play on national television with almost no runway.

“About 30 minutes into our pregame show, I get a tap on the shoulder,” he said. “They told me, ‘Hey, we need you to call the game.’”

What followed wasn’t panic — it was transition. He moved from set to booth, adjusted to a new broadcast crew he had barely worked with, and prepared to call a full NFL game on the fly. For most broadcasters, that’s a career-defining stress test. For Youmans, it became a proving ground.

“I needed somebody to finish the pregame show so I could get to the booth,” he said. “I got there about 45 minutes before kickoff. First time working with that crew, and we just went.”

The game turned into a back-and-forth Cowboys win, but the result almost felt secondary to the moment. It was the first time he truly operated as a full NFL play-by-play voice under pressure — and it worked. That night didn’t just validate his preparation. It accelerated his trajectory.
