SLIPPERY ROCK — Brenna Kuhl recalled the first time she cracked the 58-second mark in a 400-meter race for Seneca's girls track and field team.
"I thought, 'Wow, that kind of felt easy. Maybe I can get (below) 57,'" the freshman said. "Honestly, the more competitive I got in meets, the more I got my time down."
No single lap was lower than the one Kuhl completed during the May 17 District 10 championships at Slippery Rock University's Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Not only did the first-year Bobcat easily complete it in under 57 seconds, but in a time never achieved in the meet's Class 2A female.
Kuhl circled the track in 56.67 seconds. That eclipsed the former 400 standard of 57.62, which Sharpsville graduate Madison Przicina had held since the district's 2015 meet.
Seneca coach Kim Paris suspected Kuhl was no ordinary freshman as the Bobcats' 2025 regular season progressed.
"When she ran the (57.71) at the (May 8) Erie County Classic, which was in rain and cold, we set our sights on the (district) record," Paris said. "We knew she had it in her, but I will tell you even I'm surprised with her time."
Kuhl won't be the lone female Bobcat bound for Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium over Memorial Day weekend. That's where the two-day PIAA meet begins May 23.
Seneca also won the district's 2A girls 1,600 relay. Kuhl anchored upperclassmen Charlee Trapp, Olivia Paris and Madison Morvay to a first-place time of 4:06.16
"I love to win," Kuhl said, "and I love racing while trying to get better."
Kuhl accomplished what two other 2A Erie County athletes were projected to do.
Corry javelin thrower Nolan Carey and Cathedral Prep 3,200 runner Anne-Catherine Brown were ranked first for their events. Their respective seed distance and time suggested they'd be district record-holders by the time action concluded.
Carey, on the same pitch where he'll throw for The Rock next spring, won the small-school boys javelin title with his best attempt of 192 feet, 11 inches. It was short of the 196-5 meet record that Wilmington graduate Ryan Bell established in 2008.
Carey's top-seeded distance of 206-7 remains the PIAA's best throw of 2025, according to pa.milesplit.com.
Brown, like Carey, took ample solace that she still qualified for states as a district champ. The junior won varsity track's longest race at 11:11.86.
Brown arrived at The Rock with a seed time of 10:49.65. Former Harbor Creek star Lauren Zarger ran her eight laps for the 2008 2A girls 3,200 in 10:56.12.
"I really just wanted to keep focused on the goal of (success at) states," Brown said.

Fort LeBoeuf topped a competitive 2A boys field. The Bison, highlighted by middle-distance runner Blake Glass, compiled 84 points to the 78 for second-place Hickory.
"This was a prime example of (how) every point mattered," LeBoeuf coach Erick Friedman said. "We knew it was going to be very tough to win this because of Hickory, so every single athlete had to contribute.
"That's why I'm super pumped right now."
Glass guaranteed himself starting lanes for the state's 800 and 1,600 races. He became a two-time district victor thanks to respective times of 2:00.16 and 4:27.69.
LeBoeuf also enjoyed a field winner in KC Wasiulewski. The junior's top attempt in the long jump was 22-8 1/2.
McDowell's girls, with 120 points, edged the Slippery Rock Rockets by seven in the Class 3A standings.
The Trojans boasted first place in two events, one in track and one in field.
The track title was courtesy of Jamiah Zappia, Kamryn Hanson, Tenley Clark and anchor Emma Valerio. They successully passed the baton for a low time of 51.48 in the 400 relay.
McDowell's Sophia Ginader lived up to her status as the pole vault favorite. The senior was the only qualifier who cleared an even 10 feet.
