Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has said he was also taken by surprise when his striker Serhou Guirassy revealed an emotional message after scoring in a Champions League play-off match against Atalanta.
Guirassy gave Dortmund an early lead in their 2-0 victory on Tuesday and then lifted his shirt to reveal another one with a message in French translating into "May he welcome her in his big paradise."
Guirassy said post-match the words were for his brother whose daughter has died.
Kovac said "I knew nothing about" the bereavement but was happy about another strong performance from Guirassy who also set up the second goal from Maximilian Beier.
Guirassy had been struggling for form for months but has ended the drought with five goals in his last three Bundesliga matches and the strike against Atalanta.
"Serhou not only scored a goal and set up one he also controlled the ball and put pressure on the opponent," Kovac said.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: "He worked hard and believed in himself. He was extremely difficult to defend again today. Champions League seems to be his thing. I'm delighted that he's getting back on track at just the right moment."
The return leg for a place in the round of 16 is next week in Italy.
