Konnor Griffin lived up to the hype.
MLB‘s No. 1 prospect debuted for the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 3 and hit an RBI double in his first plate appearance against the Baltimore Orioles.
With his family in attendance at PNC Park, Griffin scored on a Jared Triolo single in the same inning, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead to electrify the crowd.
Griffin’s promotion was announced by the Pirates on April 2, a day off for the team. The 19-year-old shortstop batted seventh in Don Kelly’s lineup in his debut. The Orioles gave the ball to right-hander Kyle Bradish, a tough matchup for any hitter.
For moment at least, Griffin is batting 1.000.

For the Pirates, owners of the National League’s longest active playoff drought, Griffin’s arrival could not come at a better time.
The team could soon finalize a nine-year, $140 million contract extension with Griffin, which ESPN’s Buster Olney reported on April 2.
“What we have tried to do consistently — and he certainly is a great example of identifying those players who can have a positive impact for a long time,” Pirates owner Bob Nutting told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Mitch Keller wouldn’t be pitching here today if we hadn’t taken a little bit of a risk on Mitch with that extension. Bryan Reynolds, he was a very important extension. If you look back, we certainly have tried to do that consistently.
“Konnor is obviously a great candidate for that kind of a discussion.”

The ninth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Griffin finished last season at Double-A. In 21 games with the Altoona Curve, Griffin slashed .337/.418/.542 with five home runs and six stolen bases.
The Pirates invited Griffin to their major league spring training camp this year. He slashed .171/.261/.488 with four home runs, 13 strikeouts, and two walks in Grapefruit League play.
Griffin began the 2026 season at Triple-A Indianapolis. He didn’t last long, going 7-for-16 (.438) in five games.
