Knicks officially re-sign perfect Jalen Brunson backup after epic NBA Finals victory originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
With the July moratorium period ending on Monday, franchises can officially announce/complete previous reporting roster moves.
For the New York Knicks, their decision to re-sign the perfect Jalen Brunson backup after epically winning the NBA Finals is now a done deal.
“The New York Knicks announced today that the team has re-signed Jose Alvarado,” the franchise's press release stated.
“Alvarado, 28 years old (6-foot, 179 pounds), averaged 6.6 points, 3.8 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steals over 16.9 minutes in 28 games (three starts) for the New York Knicks after being acquired from the New Orleans Pelicans on Feb 5, 2026. During the 2026 NBA Championship run, he averaged 4.2 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists over 9.4 minutes in 18 games.”
Poaching Alvarado from the Pelicans before last year’s Feb. 5 trade deadline was the smartest in-season move the Knicks could have made. The Georgia Tech product proved to be the second unit lead guard New York needed to be successful, as he performed his role to perfection during the second half of the year.
Alvarado, a pesky on-ball defender capable of quickly lowering his center of gravity on the offensive end and scoring when needed, played a pivotal role in the Knicks fourth-round series over the San Antonio Spurs. The 28-year-old made several big-time plays off the bench in New York’s remarkable 20-point Game 4 comeback win over the Spurs, with the most notable being a late-game three-point jumper and assist to help the Knicks close the gap.
Alvarado finished the contest with eight points, three assists, and two rebounds in the narrow 107-106 win, helping New York jump out to a 3-1 lead and eventually put the series out of reach.
With Alvarado back in the fold, it’s safe to say New York’s 2026-27 bench unit is in good hands.
