The Knicks are going to keep one key bench player from the newly-minted NBA championship team, but “can’t possibly’ retain another if they’re going to avoid the second apron.
The NBA’s second apron is a harsh salary cap threshold implemented to penalize hyper-spending franchises, deter superteams, and force roster parity. Teams that exceed this limit face severe, multi-layered restrictions on trades, free agency, and draft assets.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, “Free agent guard Landry Shamet intends to sign a new four-year, $24 million deal to return to the New York Knicks, sources tell ESPN. Shamet’s agent, George S. Langberg of GSL Sports Group, worked with Knicks executives on Monday to land the long-term commitment.”
Shamet and reserve center Mitchell Robinson were key role players as the Knicks won their first NBA title in 53 years, but keeping Robinson may prove harder to keep if the team is going to avoid going into the dreaded second apron as owner James Dolan mandated.
“The Knicks can’t possibly make an offer [to Robinson] if they’re going to stay out of the second apron,” Alan Hahn, who covers the Knicks for the MSG Network, said Monday on “Don, Hahn and Rosenberg.”
The Knicks have traded away a slew of draft picks in the recent NBA Draft to save money for their own free agents like Robinson.
But they could still lose their backup center to a team like the L.A. Lakers if Los Angeles shows him the money.
“I would say if the Lakers put an offer in that $13-15 million range, it would be hard for New York to match something like that,” ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks said on air during last Wednesday’s NBA Draft.

Dolan said his team won’t go into the second apron to keep the roster intact.
“We cannot go into the second apron,” Dolan said recently on WFAN radio in New York.
