On the tip-in heard around the NBA world, OG Anunoby's game-winner in the 2026 NBA Finals penciled him into basketball lore for the rest of eternity. The New York Knicks' historic 29-point comeback over the San Antonio Spurs will be headlined by his second-chance bucket.
Now, the Knicks are a win away from an NBA championship. They hold a 3-1 series lead over the Spurs. And considering the score was 81-52 in the early parts of the third quarter, it felt like a one-in-a-billion shot for New York to accomplish what it did.
But they're not the first team to pull off the improbable feat. In fact, the Knicks joined the Oklahoma City Thunder as recent teams who've completed a 29-point comeback in the NBA playoffs. The Thunder did that on their way to a 2025 NBA championship with a 114-108 Game 3 win in their Round 1 series to go up 3-0 en route to a sweep.
Of course, that game is known when Ja Morant suffered a hip injury. And to add an extra layer, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had actually been part of something similar one other time in his career.
Gilgeous-Alexander is actually part of the team that has the largest comeback in NBA playoff history. All the way back in his rookie season, the LA Clippers mounted a 31-point comeback in their 135-131 Game 2 win in the 2019 Round 1 playoff series.
Another piece of common ground? Landry Shamet was on both the Clippers and Knicks for their respective historic comebacks. Like Gilgeous-Alexander, he was an LA rookie. Bouncing around the league since, he'd played his best stretch of professional basketball during New York's destiny run.
Just a fun fact to share. The Thunder went on to win the NBA championship with their 29-point comeback. And it looks like the Knicks are well on their way to do the same this year.
