World Cup top goalscorer Miroslav Klose believes that his record will potentially be broken this summer at the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

"I'm sure that my World Cup goal record will be broken soon. Either Lionel Messi will do it this or Kylian Mbappe will do it later," Klose told the Sport Bild weekly on Wednesday.

The former Germany striker, who set the current record on his way to the title in 2014, pointed out that unlike him, Messi and Mbappe also take penalty kicks.

Klose tops the list with 16 goals, followed by Brazil great Ronaldo (15), Germany legend Gerd Müller (14), Messi and Just Fontaine (13) and Mbappe and Pelé (12).

At 38 years old, Messi is expected to play for title holders Argentina this year, while Mbappe should also have a secure spot in the France squad.

"I believe I still have the most wins at a World Cup and I'm the only player to have played in four semi-finals," said Klose, who's currently coach of German second division club Nuremberg.

"Those are a few things that have stayed with me," he added. Klose has won 17 of 24 games - indeed the top mark.

Regarding the current Germany squad, Klose sees a clear favourite to become the top striker.

"I believe that Nick Woltemade currently has the edge in the German attack. He brings a really good package to the table," he said.

He added that he sees Borussia Mönchengladbach's Tim Kleindienst as an interesting option, while Niclas Füllkrug and Kai Havertz must first remain healthy and fit.
