Last season Ashton Jeanty saw a pretty good amount of carries. The rookie running back saw 266 rushes which was seventh in the league. And yet, with the issues on the offensive line, that still wasn't enough for him to reach the 1000-yard mark.
Even with the addition of Mike Washington in this year's draft, Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak actually wants to see Jeanty's role expand.
"We think we should continue to challenge Ashton and get more out of him," said Kubiak.
That's saying a lot considering Jeanty was already on the field for 76.6% of the team's snaps last season, touching the ball 321 times.
So, what kind of numbers is Kubiak looking for from Jeanty?
"I don't know the play snap percentage, but you look at Christian McCaffrey, his play snap percentage is high," Kubiak added. "So, those great backs, they don't want to come off the field."
McCaffrey's numbers were quite high. He was on the field for 83% of the snaps in San Francisco. With those snaps, he led the league with 413 touches including 311 carries which was the second most in the league.
For Jeanty to hit those numbers he would need to touch the ball 92 more times than he did last season, including 45 more carries, and increase his field percentage by seven points.
"I look forward to it a lot," Jeanty responded. "I mean, obviously I want to help the team win as much as I can, and if I don't have to, I don't want to come off the field."
That wouldn't leave a great many carries for the Raiders number two back.
Last season the Raiders backup running back saw a combined 60 touches with 41 carries. That being said, they had 134 fewer offensive plays last season than the 49ers. So, it would seem Washington best shot at getting some touches behind Jeanty would simply be from having more snaps to go around.
